The Magra el-Oyoun aqueduct
Three kilometres of Mamluk arches that carried Nile water up to the Citadel.
€ BudgetOff the beaten track
A hexagonal water intake by the river, vanished water wheels, and a line of arches still crossing the city to the foot of the Citadel. The monument has been cleared and lit, and can be walked alongside from Fustat.
The extra bit
Follow it east on foot as far as the tanners' workshops: a route nobody takes.
Know before you go
A very working-class district with heavy traffic: do it by day, and without bulky camera gear.
