Mut is the main town of Dakhla Oasis, seven hours' drive from the Nile. Its cafés are the only lively public space after dark, and you easily meet guides from the nearby villages of Al-Qasr and Balat there.

The extra bit

Ask at the café where the evening hot springs are: they are unsigned and access changes with the season.

Know before you go

Winter nights are cold in the oases: a jacket is needed from November after sunset.
