A desert road at the foot of a cliff, a lone car in the distance.

Marsa Alam & the Red Sea · Ain Sokhna

El Galala

A new city on a plateau at seven hundred metres, above the Gulf of Suez.

€€€ High end

A hairpin road climbs from the sea to the Galala plateau, where a resort has been built from scratch: hotels, a university, a balcony promenade over the gulf. The climb itself is the show — sea on one side, cliff on the other, Sinai opposite.

The extra bit

Drive up in late afternoon: the low light on the gulf from the plateau is what you come for.

Know before you go

Two hours from Cairo by the Sokhna road: a weekend outing, not an afternoon trip.
