During Ramadan, restaurants offer fixed-price iftar menus served at sunset, and the charity tables — mawa'id al-rahman — are set up in the street to feed whoever comes, free. It is the time of year when Egyptian cooking shows itself best.

Book iftar several days ahead, and arrive twenty minutes before sunset.
Know before you go
Just before iftar the city empties and taxis vanish: do not plan to travel then.
