Grass, shade and room to spread out in the middle of Zamalek, two minutes from the metro.
Al Horreya Garden is central Cairo's cheap day out: broad lawns, statues, benches in the shade and an unlikely quiet in the middle of Zamalek, a few steps from the Opera metro station and within sight of the Nile. You do not come for rides but for room: you pay a small ticket at the gate, pick your patch of lawn, settle in, and the children have space in front of them. It is a neighbourhood garden, not a destination — the kind of place for two hours on a Friday morning, not for a whole day.
The extra bit
Come out at Opera metro station and have the price confirmed at the window before paying for the whole family: the fare we read dates from spring 2026. Bring a mat and your own food — outings guides say it is allowed, so ask at the entrance rather than find out when you are already loaded up. And come early in the morning or late in the afternoon: in between, the shade of the trees is the only shade there is.
Know before you go
The only price we have read comes from an outings piece of March 2026 — a ticket of no more than 20 pounds. It may have changed, and we give no other; the opening hours we do not know at all. This is a garden, not a leisure park: grass, trees, benches and statues — whether there is a playground we have not checked. At Eid the lawn fills up: our source was in fact an Eid outing tip. And the name misleads twice — this is neither the el-Horreya café downtown nor the Andalus Garden, which is on the corniche of the same island.
