Kadoura
You pick your fish off the ice, they grill it, you eat facing the harbour.

The Alexandrian ritual in its purest form, and since 1950. At the door, the counter: sea bream, grey mullet, prawns, squid, landed that morning. You point, they weigh it in front of you, they quote the price per kilo, and the fish comes back charcoal-grilled with baladi bread, tahina salad, lemon and rocket. Nothing else, and it's perfect.
The extra bit
Ask for bouri (grey mullet) rather than sea bream: half the price, twice the flavour. It's what Alexandrians order.
Know before you go
Price depends on weight: have the total said out loud before cooking — the only real precaution to take. Cash preferred. No alcohol. Full at Friday lunch.
