The centre's biggest street market: everything is sold here, and everything is shouted.

Between Attaba square and the Muski, kilometres of stalls take over the roadway: crockery, toys, stationery, clothes, electronics. It is loud, dense, exhausting and fascinating — one of the places where you best measure Cairo's size.

The extra bit

Go in the morning: in the afternoon the crowd makes crossing painful and prices do not drop for it.
