Stacks of second-hand books and textbooks piled to the top, packed tight against one another.

Cairo · Azbakeya, Downtown

The Azbakeya book market

Dozens of second-hand book stalls, a Cairo institution for a century.

BudgetOur favourite

"Sour el-Azbakeya" is Cairo's wall of books: novels, textbooks, old magazines, out-of-print editions, stacked floor to ceiling in tight huts. The booksellers know their stock by heart and find in thirty seconds what a catalogue would take an hour to produce.

The extra bit

Say the subject rather than the title: that is how the sellers search, and they do better.

Know before you go

Cash, and prices are negotiated by volume: three books cost less than three times one.
