Al-Fattah Al-Aleem Mosque
The new capital's great mosque, inaugurated in 2019 in the desert east of Cairo.

A mosque seating several thousand, with four ninety-five-metre minarets, built in one go on bare sand. It is worth visiting for what it says about today's Egypt: an entire capital raised from nothing, with its mosque and its cathedral facing each other.
The extra bit
See it with the Cathedral of the Nativity a few hundred metres away: both were inaugurated on the same day, and that gesture is the point.
Know before you go
Covered clothing, shoes off at the door, headscarf for women. The capital is an hour from central Cairo, with no direct public transport.
