Cairo · Rhoda island

The Rhoda nilometer

A well from 861 that measured the flood and set the tax for all Egypt.

BudgetOff the beaten track

A graduated column at the bottom of a square well, with pointed arches and Kufic inscriptions: depending on the flood level, the year was declared good or bad, and taxes set accordingly. One of Egypt's oldest Islamic buildings, and almost nobody goes there.

The extra bit

Go all the way down: the scale only makes sense from the bottom, not from the entrance.

Know before you go

Combine with the neighbouring Manasterly palace, on the same tip of the island.
