Cairo · Sayeda Aisha, Cairo

The Friday market of Sayeda Aisha

Egypt's largest flea market, under the aqueduct's arches.

BudgetOff the beaten track

Every Friday morning, kilometres of stalls set up at the foot of the aqueduct: tools, spare parts, crockery, clothes, animals, dubious antiques and genuine finds. It is a social spectacle as much as a market, and it resembles nothing else in Cairo.

The extra bit

Arrive before 9 am: after that the crowd slows everything and the good pieces are gone.

Know before you go

Very dense crowd: bag closed in front, nothing in back pockets, no flashy gear.
