Gold sets lined up on their busts, in the window

Cairo · Khan el-Khalili

The gold market (Sagha)

The Khan's goldsmiths, where gold is sold by the gram and the work is charged separately.

€€€ High end

A whole street of jewellers in the heart of Khan el-Khalili: chains, bracelets, cartouches engraved with your name in hieroglyphs. The price is weight times the day's rate, plus workmanship — the only part that really gets negotiated.

The extra bit

Ask for the day's rate and the hallmark: Egyptian gold is stamped, and an unstamped piece is not even worth discussing.

Know before you go

An engraved cartouche takes hours to days: order it early in the stay, not the day before you leave.
