Set up in the early 2000s by the Cairo Governorate with UNESCO backing to save crafts facing extinction, the souk gathers around forty shops: ceramics, copper, blown glass, Nubian weaving, Coptic embroidery, Bedouin jewellery, Siwa products. Prices are on tags and identical for Egyptians and foreigners — which, in Egypt, is worth flagging.

Pair it with Coptic Cairo, five minutes on foot: the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra synagogue and the Coptic Museum are next door.

Know before you go

You don't haggle here, and that's the point: fixed prices guarantee the workshop's cut. Pricier than the Khan, but quality is consistent and provenance traceable. Closes earlier than a classic souk.
