Cairo's Syrian tables

Shawarma, fatteh and Damascene sweets: the cooking Syria brought to Egypt.

BudgetOur favourite

Since 2012, dozens of Syrian restaurants have opened in Cairo, mostly in 6th of October and Nasr City: blade-cut shawarma, yoghurt fatteh, kibbeh, and pastries that changed the city's sweet landscape. One of the most visible shifts in Cairo dining.

The extra bit

Yoghurt-and-garlic fatteh is the dish that separates a real Syrian table from an imitation.
