Zööba

Egyptian street food redrawn by a designer, without betraying the recipe.

4.4Ratingour own rating€€ Mid-rangeOur favourite

Taameya, foul, hawawshi, feteer: the pavement classics, cleanly made, served in an unapologetically pop room at prices that are still fair. This is the address for someone discovering Egyptian food who you'd rather not throw in at the deep end. The house started in Zamalek and has since spread well beyond Cairo.

The extra bit

The taameya in baladi bread and the hawawshi are the two to order first. Take them away and eat by the Nile, five minutes' walk.

Know before you go

Several Cairo branches; the Zamalek one is the original and the nicest. Vegetarian and vegan options are clearly marked on the menu, still rare in Egypt.
