On the central square, a simple restaurant that has fed travellers and Siwans for decades: stews, garden vegetables, olives and oasis dates. It is the oasis's rallying point as much as a place to eat.

Try Siwa dates and the local olive oil: the oasis's two products, and easy to take home.

Know before you go

No alcohol in the oasis, and the menu is largely vegetarian by local habit.
