Alexandria · Anfoushi, Alexandria

Abou Ashraf

Fish picked off the ice, grilled in the alley, eaten at plastic tables.

€€ Mid-range

A neighbourhood joint near the fishing port: you pick your fish by weight, it goes to the grill or the fryer, and comes back with bread, tahini and salad. Nothing more, and it is one of the best meals in the city.

The extra bit

Ask the price per kilo before choosing, and have it weighed in front of you: that is the custom, nobody takes offence.

Know before you go

Cash. The Anfoushi district is worth a walk before or after, as far as Qaitbay fort.
