A plate of small fried fish, lemon and white sauce

Alexandria · Abu Qir, east of Alexandria

The tables of Abu Qir

Alexandria's fish eaten where it lands, facing Nelson's bay.

€€ Mid-range

Abu Qir is the Alexandrians' fishing port and their Friday outing: a line of fish houses by the water, where you pick from the ice and pay by weight. It is here that the bay saw Napoleon's fleet sink in 1798.

The extra bit

On Friday lunchtime, book or come early: Alexandrians come down in families.

Know before you go

Cash, price per kilo confirmed before cooking, and transport: Abu Qir is 25 km from the centre.
