Nubian crafts in Gharb Soheil

Woven baskets, necklaces and spices sold in the painted houses of the Nubian village.

Budget

On the west bank, the village houses sell the families' work: palm basketry with Nubian patterns, bead jewellery, hibiscus and spices. Prices stay modest and the money goes straight to the craftswomen.

The extra bit

Buy karkadeh here rather than at the Aswan souk: it comes from the gardens opposite and costs less.

Know before you go

The village lives largely on tourism: the crocodiles kept captive in some houses are not a tradition but an attraction.
