Marsa Matruh's bay is closed by a rock bar that leaves the water still and clear; the corniche cafés use it as their setting. In summer the town is full of Egyptian families on holiday; out of season it empties almost completely.

The extra bit

Come in June or September: the water is warm and the town is not yet, or no longer, saturated.
