Marsa Matrouh and Siwa · El Alamein, north coast
The El Alamein Commonwealth cemetery
Seven thousand headstones aligned facing the desert, in total silence.
€ Budget
The Commonwealth war cemetery gathers the graves of soldiers who fell in 1942, kept to the line: lawns, names, ages — twenty, twenty-two. It is the coast's most sober and most powerful place, and one of the few in Egypt you come to in silence.
The extra bit
The register at the entrance lets you look up a name: what changes the visit for many people.
Know before you go
Free entry, no shade at all: come early, and respect the silence.
