A white-sailed felucca crossing the river at sunset.

Aswan · Essa island, Aswan

El Dokka

A restaurant on a Nile island, reachable only by boat.

€€ Mid-rangeOur favourite

The house sends its own boat to fetch you from the corniche: a ten-minute crossing, then a terrace set on the river among the cataract rocks. Egyptian and Nubian cooking, sunset thrown in.

The extra bit

Book and ask for the boat: without it, access is awkward and dearly negotiated.

Know before you go

Bring a jacket: on the water, Aswan nights are cool even in summer.
