Alexandria's ice cream houses

Buffalo-milk and mastic ice cream, a Greek tradition that stayed Alexandrian.

Budget

Alexandria inherited from the Greeks a dense ice cream, scented with mastic, eaten in a cone on the Corniche. Several old houses still make it, and the summer evening queue is part of the scene.

The extra bit

Ask for mastic ("mastika"): the historic flavour, and it tastes like nothing else.

Know before you go

Cash, long queues on summer evenings, counter service with no seating.
