Tanta's sweet shops

Roasted chickpeas and mawlid halva, made here for generations.

Budget

Tanta is Egypt's capital of mawlid sweets: nougats, sesame bars, roasted chickpeas, sugar dolls. The workshops sell wholesale and retail all year, and boxes travel easily.

The extra bit

Try the sesame "soumsoumeya": it is the specialty, and it keeps for weeks.

Know before you go

Prices rise sharply during the mawlid: buy out of season if you can.
