Siwa has its own culture, closer to Berber North Africa than to the Nile valley, and its crafts show it: silk-embroidered dresses, solid silver jewellery, basketry. The oasis's women's cooperatives sell directly in several shops in the centre.
The extra bit
Siwa olive oil and dates are the two things to take home: found everywhere and three times cheaper than in Cairo.
