Marsa Matruh market
The coastal town's market: figs, dates, Bedouin wool and beach goods.
€ Budget
Marsa Matruh is the outlet for the western coast's Bedouin tribes, and its market shows it: hand-woven wool rugs, desert honey, dried figs, herbs. In summer it overflows with Egyptian holidaymakers; out of season it becomes a provincial market again.
The extra bit
Bedouin wool rugs are sold by weight as much as by piece: ask where the wool comes from.
Know before you go
Many shops close from October to May, like the rest of the town.
