The furniture workshops of Damietta
Egypt's furniture capital: whole streets of cabinetmakers and wood carvers.
€€ Mid-rangeOff the beaten track
Damietta makes most of the furniture sold in Egypt, in thousands of family workshops. You watch panels being carved, veneered, gilded — a know-how that goes back to the town's Mediterranean trade, and that no organised tour ever visits.
The extra bit
Small objects — boxes, trays, mashrabiya panels — are found in the same streets and can be carried home.
Know before you go
Damietta is three hours from Cairo: it is an excursion, and little there is designed for visitors.
