El Alamein military museum
The 1942 battle told on the ground, among tanks, maps and cemeteries.
€ Budget
The museum gathers material from the five armies that fought here, and it is visited together with the war cemeteries nearby — Commonwealth, German, Italian — all within a few kilometres. It is the one place in Egypt that tells the twentieth century rather than antiquity.
The extra bit
Take the coast road and do the three cemeteries in one go: they tell the battle better than the display cases.
Know before you go
The desert around El Alamein is still mined in places: do not leave the roads and marked paths.
