On the heights of the Nubian village, a house serving tagines, spiced chicken and bean dishes in a courtyard open to the river. Nubian cooking differs from Egyptian in its spices and mildness, and this is where it is best tasted.

The extra bit

Cross by felucca at sunset rather than by motorboat: the west bank should be approached from the water.

The village lives on tourism and there are many solicitations: agree the crossing price before boarding.
