Maamoura beach

The Alexandrians' family beach, sheltered and shallow.

Budget

East of the city, a sheltered bay where the water stays calm and families settle for the day under parasols. The classic Egyptian beach, with its grilled-corn and tea sellers, a long way from Red Sea postcards.

The extra bit

Hire a parasol and chairs for the day: it is the custom, and costs a few dozen pounds.

Know before you go

Women often swim clothed: it is the local norm, not imposed on visitors.
