Port Fouad

A town in Asia ten minutes away by ferry, with wooden villas and gardens.

Across the canal, Port Fouad was built in 1926 to house Company employees: planted streets, verandaed houses, silence. The ferry is free, leaves every few minutes and changes continent — the most disorienting crossing in Egypt, for nothing at all.

The extra bit

Ride it both ways at sunset: container ships pass a few dozen metres from the ferry.

Know before you go

The ferry also carries cars: the vehicle queue is long, the pedestrian one never is.
