Tunis owes its reputation to a pottery school founded in the 1960s whose pupils spread out: nearly every house has its kiln and its shop. Pieces are signed, styles recognisable, and you can often try the wheel.

Workshops offer hour-long classes for children: the best Fayoum activity with young ones.

Know before you go

The ceramics festival takes place in November: the village is full then, and it is the best time to choose.
