The Ottoman houses of Rosetta

Some twenty houses in red and black brick, unique in Egypt.

BudgetOff the beaten track

Rosetta has kept the country's finest set of Ottoman houses: chequered brick façades, mashrabiyas, painted ceilings. Several can be visited, almost always alone, in a town the world knows for a stone that is no longer there.

The extra bit

Start with the Arab Kili house: the best restored, and the keeper opens the others.

Know before you go

Rosetta is an hour from Alexandria: a day trip, by taxi or microbus.
