Safaga
A windsurfing port and a black-sand beach reputed to be therapeutic.
€€ Mid-range
An hour south of Hurghada, Safaga lives on phosphate, wind and black sand: its beaches draw psoriasis cures, and its bay is one of Egypt's steadiest sailing waters. The town is modest and free of mass tourism.
The extra bit
The good winds blow in the afternoon: sailing schools go out after 1 pm, rarely before.
Know before you go
The black sand's therapeutic virtues are not guaranteed: cures are medically supervised, not self-prescribed.
