In the Attarine lanes, dozens of shops sell what the cosmopolitan city left behind: mirrors, lamps, silverware, French and Italian furniture. It is an antique dealers' market rather than a tourist souk, and you spend hours rummaging.

Small pieces — handles, tiles, oil lamps — travel in hand luggage and cost little: start there.
