Tanis
A field of toppled obelisks in the Delta, and intact royal tombs.
€ BudgetOff the beaten track
Capital of Egypt at the end of the New Kingdom, Tanis yielded royal tombs of silver and gold nearly as rich as Tutankhamun's — and nobody remembers. The site is a chaos of blocks and broken obelisks, two and a half hours from Cairo, and you are alone there.
The extra bit
The treasures are in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo: see them before or after, or the site seems mute.
Know before you go
No services on site, uneven ground, only guards: bring water, closed shoes and a driver who waits.
