The Mustafa Kamel tombs

Four Greco-Roman rock-cut tombs, in a neighbourhood garden.

A staircase drops into the rock towards columned burial chambers, with traces of painting and an open courtyard. The site is tiny, watched over by a gardener, and near-deserted — the exact opposite of the Kom el-Shoqafa catacombs, fifteen minutes away.

The extra bit

Ask the keeper to light the far chamber: the colours only appear under his torch.

Know before you go

A poorly signposted site in a residential district: the entrance is a garden gate.
