The Wadi el-Hitan museum

An eighteen-metre skeleton of a legged whale, in a museum buried in the desert.

€€ Mid-range

Egypt's first museum devoted to fossils, half-buried so as not to spoil the World Heritage site. It shows the complete Basilosaurus found there — a whale that still had hind legs, evidence of the move from land to sea.

The extra bit

Walk the fossil trail after the museum: the skeletons were left where they were found, on the sand.

Know before you go

A 4×4 is needed for the last kilometres, and the park entry fee comes on top of the museum.
