Buggy Desert Safari

Quad bikes in the desert, a stop in a Bedouin village, mint tea and sunset.

€€ Mid-range

The classic hinterland trip: a track of sand and stone, an hour or two on a quad, then a stop at a camp where tea is served and camels go round. The desert begins twenty minutes from the coast, and the silence when the engines stop is what stays with you.

The extra bit

A scarf over nose and mouth, and wraparound glasses: behind the lead quad, everyone eats the dust of the one in front.

Know before you go

The "Bedouin" camps on tourist circuits are staged, and the guide would rather say so: the visit is still enjoyable, it is simply not an encounter. Long sleeves despite the heat — desert sun burns in half an hour.

    Our favourite

The harbour promenade: yachts on one side, terraces on the other, and the whole town out after dark.
