Alexandria · Abu Qir, Alexandria

Zephyrion

A Greek taverna from 1929 at the water's edge, on the Abu Qir point.

€€€ High end

Founded by a Greek family of Alexandria, the house serves fish by weight on a terrace set over the bay. The decor has not changed in decades, and it is one of the last tables that recall cosmopolitan Alexandria other than by nostalgia.

The extra bit

Take a table on the lower terrace: the sea runs literally under your feet.

Know before you go

Abu Qir is 25 km from the centre: budget the taxi, and avoid Friday lunchtime, which is packed.
