The Avenue of Sphinxes

Two kilometres and seven hundred sphinxes between Luxor and Karnak, reopened after forty years of excavation.

€€ Mid-rangeUnmissable

The processional way linking the two temples was cleared house by house, then given back to the public in late 2021. You walk it at sphinx height, in a stone corridor cutting through the modern town — Luxor's most spectacular walk, and its newest.

The extra bit

Walk it from Luxor temple towards Karnak in late afternoon: the light comes from behind and picks out every sphinx.

Know before you go

No shade the whole way, and the ground throws the heat back: avoid midday from April to October.
