Sofra
Luxor's best table, in an old house, far from the picture menus.
4.7Ratingour own rating€€ Mid-rangeOur favourite
A restored traditional house, rooms dressed with mashrabiya screens and copperware, a roof terrace, and Egyptian cooking done seriously: mezze, clay-pot tagines, molokheya, stuffed pigeon. Locals, cruise crews and travellers all end up here, which is usually a good sign.
The extra bit
Go up to the roof as soon as you arrive, before dark: you see the rooftops of Luxor and, beyond, the Theban hills.
Know before you go
It's in the lanes behind the Corniche: give the name to a driver rather than hunting for the sign. Book in high season (November–March). No alcohol.
