Giza Plateau

The only one of the seven ancient wonders still standing. Arrive at opening.

4.9Ratingour own rating€€ Mid-rangeUnmissable

Three great pyramids, the Sphinx, six subsidiary pyramids, and a desert plateau that begins where the asphalt stops. Khufu still tops 130 metres after forty-five centuries. Entering the burial chamber is its own experience — a long passage taken bent double, the heat, then a bare granite room — but not for the claustrophobic.

The extra bit

The postcard panorama is from the south-west mound, where the three pyramids line up. It's included in the ticket and almost nobody walks up early.

Know before you go

A separate, limited ticket is required for the inside of the Great Pyramid: buy it online the day before. Hat, two litres of water and closed shoes are essential. For a camel or horse: total price, duration and drop-off point agreed out loud BEFORE mounting, payment on return.
