The west bank has its guesthouses and village restaurants: tagines, chicken, salads, served under palm roofs with the Theban mountain behind. You lunch there after the tombs, when the heat makes the return impossible.

Book a day ahead at a guesthouse: they cook to order, there is no menu.

Know before you go

Cash only on this side of the river, and few cash machines: sort it out before crossing.
