The bazaars of Nazlet el-Semman
The shops at the foot of the pyramids: papyrus, alabaster, statuettes — and the art of bargaining.
€€ Mid-range
The village at the foot of the plateau has lived on tourism for a century and a half: papyrus workshops, alabaster carvers, souvenir shops along the road. Quality varies wildly and sales pressure is strong, but real pieces are there if you know how to look.
The extra bit
Real papyrus folds without breaking and shows crossed fibres against the light: the fake is banana leaf.
Know before you go
Opening prices are very high: dividing by three is a reasonable starting point, and walking away works.
