Wissa Wassef Art Centre
Hand-woven tapestries since 1952, in a village of mud-brick workshops.
€€€ High endOff the beaten track
A centre founded by architect Ramses Wissa Wassef to teach village children weaving without imposing a model: each tapestry is freely composed by its maker. The mud-vaulted buildings alone are worth the visit, and a small museum shows the older pieces.
The extra bit
Ask to see the looms in use: the weavers work on site, and that is what makes sense of the prices.
Know before you go
On the Saqqara road: the visit combines with the step pyramids in the same day.
